The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses In King County (except for Seattle). The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division’s heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater. Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the byproducts of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

TRANSPORTATION UNIT:   Staff provides transportation of garbage from the Solid Waste Division’s transfer stations located throughout the County to the Division’s landfill in Maple Valley. JOB DUTIES:

  • Safely operate a variety of vehicles including truck and trailer, truck equipped with water storage tank and pump, dump trucks with pony trailers, fuel tanker trucks, and belly bumps.
  • Hook and unhook hydraulic hoses, properly brake in a variety of situations and weather conditions, safely install tire chains.
  • Load and transport solid waste and trailers, equipment, gravel, water, fuel, and other materials to work areas throughout King County.
  • Perform and document safety inspection of tractors and trailers.
  • Check and refill fluid levels and tire pressure; refuel and maintain vehicle in a clean and operational condition.
  • Document trip activities and complete required trip reports,

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:

Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience driving tractor/trailer Or similar combinations such as:

  • Class A tractor/trailer combinations with three Or four axles towing a unit with two or three axles with a gross vehicle weight of a maximum of 17,000 pounds per axle.
  • Belly dump trailer, 12 to 14 yard pony trailer.
  • 6,000 to 7,000 gallon wastewater tanker.
  • 3,000 to 4,000 gallon fuel truck.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License
  • Current Washington state Department of Transportation Medical Card
  • Air Brake Endorsement
  • Current five (5) year abstract driving record from the Department of licensing
  • Candidate(s) must be able to work on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as high volume noise, dust and. heavy traffic.

Job Description:

  • This labor-intensive position is responsible for loading transport, bulk, and route trucks. Each type of loading requires strict attention to order accuracy with respect to loading outgoing trucks and unloading incoming trucks.
  • Works from order sheets to build loads using a forklift and/or electronic pallet Jack.
  • Position Is responsible for accuracy in loading and complying with shipper/receiver documentation.
  • Follows warehouse instructions in building loads.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Position may be required to work across a wide variety of weather conditions.
  • Transport truck loading involves moving full pallets of products from the warehouse onto a trailer and removing any returned pallets/plastic flats. Responsible for unloading raw materials and placing them in designated warehouse space.
  • Bulk truck loading involves selecting designated packages and flavors of products from the warehouse and loading them onto a pallet. Position is responsible for maintaining the stability of the pallet through proper stacking and shrink-wrapping. In most cases, pallets are loaded onto a trailer for local delivery. Position is responsible for unloading returned products and pallets/plastic flats.
  • Conventional truck loading Involves selecting designated packages and flavors of products from the warehouse and loading them into the bays of a route truck. Product/packages for each truck are customized based on the salespersons order. Position is responsible for unloading returned products and pallets/plastic flats.
  • Position requires lifting a very high volume of cases of product per day from 20-45 pound, per case repeatedly during a long work period.
  • Requires constant standing, walking, bending, twisting, squatting, reaching and grasping as product is moved.

PRIMARY JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Drive hi-lift to picking area and build pallet/load according to load sheet or voice pick audio equipment (if applicable)
