Job Description

  • Driving represents approximately 30 % of the Truck Driver’s day, remaining portion of the day is taken up by other activities including; delivery, filling, shipping orders/ paperwork, customer contact, vehicle AM and PM inspections
  • Route Truck Driver responsible for delivery to all types of Industrial, Service, Educational and Medical customers
  • Responsible for counting and recording quantities and styles of product delivered and picked up to ensure accurate paperwork for customer transactions
  • Completes Hazardous Material shipping orders papers in accordance with DOT/TC Regulations
  • Placard vehicle according to required hazardous material regulations and PDI standards
  • Handheld computers are used for conducting customer transaction paperwork as well as compliance needs such as Hazmat preparation, vehicle inspection reports, load report, trip reports etc. Truck Drivers follow a computer generated Route and Sequence delivery plan.
  • Conducts and reports pre-trip and post-trip inspections noting and explaining defects or deficiencies to supervision
  • Identifies need for repairs and/or maintenance to vehicles and is accountable for ensuring the maintenance or repairs are accomplished with a minimum of disruption to the operation
  • Operates a variety of equipment and regularly interfaces with both internal and external customers

  • Have at least two years driving experience or have completed a course of instruction from a Truck Driver training school that operates equipment similar to Praxair’s
  • No preventable accidents, license suspensions, alcohol related violations or other moving violations in the past 3 years

 Our Kent Maintenance facility is looking for several individuals who thrive on working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather.  These positions will assist with the maintenance and operations of the state highways, and adjacent right of ways to assure they remain in a condition that promotes the movement of traffic, and safety to the motoring public.
As a Maintenance Technician, the successful candidates will be responsible, safety-minded, and able to accomplish assigned tasks that require operating 26,000 to 54,000 GVW trucks and other large pieces of equipment. The incumbents will repair guardrail and setup traffic control for street sweeping and catch basin cleaning operations to keep traffic moving safely among other highway maintenance operations.  Other responsibilities include roadside vegetation management, mowing, tree removal and brush control.
These positions require a response time (travel time) of 30 minutes or less to the maintenance yard.  Should you be required to relocate in order to accept this position, there may be an opportunity to discuss a transition period to meet the requirement with the hiring authority at the time of offer. Highway maintenance crews are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Maintenance positions may include day or night, rotating or weekend shifts. There are times when we have emergency call outs, work extended shifts on short notice (days, nights and weekends), and perform stand by duty on a rotational basis.  In addition is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Highway Administration.

 The general qualifications for this position at either the Maintenance Technician 1 or 2 levels are:
  • Maintain roadways, including ditching, patching, and hauling materials.
  • Fall trees and remove vegetation.
  • Maintain highway drainage systems.
  • Repair and replace guardrails and signs.
  • Safely operate 1 ½ – 2yd. front end loaders to load trucks, mix sand and deicers, and build stockpiles.
  • Remove dangerous and hazardous debris from the roadways.
  • Maintain highway catch basins.
  • Assist in layout and set-up of traffic control, including setting up signage, manually flagging traffic, and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Removal of snow and ice during winter season.
  • Responsible for repairing right of way fences, clean culvert ends and paint culvert marks and wash signs.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively follow instructions.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts and/or available for call-out to respond to emergencies
To qualify for the Maintenance Technician 1 level, the successful applicant must have:
  • A Class B CDL without airbrake restrictions and a current medical card.
  • Minimum of (1) one year experience performing highway maintenance work, driving 26,000 or larger GVW trucks or operating heavy equipment in the landscaping, forestry, farming or constructions industries or equivalent.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED certification.
Required qualifications for a Maintenance Technician 2:
  • Have A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions and a current medical card.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED certification.
  • Minimum of (2) two years’ performing highway maintenance work, driving 26,000 or larger GVW trucks or operating heavy equipment in the landscaping, forestry, farming or constructions industries or equivalent.
 Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision.
