The IBT was founded in 1903 and Local 174 joined the IBT in 1909. Today, Teamsters Local 174 is known by its many friends and foes alike as a proud, militant, progressive, patriotic, democratic organization.

Please have a look at the special report based on our January-March 2009 issue, entitled “Local 174 a Powerful Presence in the American Union Family.” It’s printed in full here. Since it was chartered in 1909, Local 174 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has grown to become one of greater Seattle’s most important and influential unions.

Its first members truly did drive teams of horses to deliver goods for local employers. These teamsters quickly made the transition to motor trucks.

Read about these early days of 174 in “Teamsters Local 174 in Seattle: An Illustrated History. It’s printed in full here under the editorship of Gordon Rice, who had edited the short–lived Labor Gazette in 1894.
