Many Retail Customers Not Selling Beers Distributed By Shore Point

(Freehold, N.J.) – Teamster members, union allies and supporters are protesting Shore Point Distributing’s lockout of its workers, as are Shore Point’s retail customers.

On April 30, Shore Point, Freehold, New Jersey, locked out 113 of its workers in an attempt to force them to give up their pension, accept a 3-year wage freeze, and agree to give the company permission to change their health insurance plan and co-pays at any time. (more…)

UPS Teamsters Rally at Shareholder Meeting to Support Lobbying Accountability Proposal

(WILMINGTON, Del.) – UPS employees and Teamster Union leaders gathered this morning outside the package giant’s annual shareholder meeting to demand lobbying disclosures and accountability at the company. A proposal co-sponsored by the Teamsters was presented in the meeting calling for transparent reporting of the company’s lobbying activity, which includes contributions to groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s time for UPS to stop wasting resources on legislative efforts that not only undercut the long-term interests of the company, but also the interests of its shareholders, many of whom are UPS employees and retirees,” said Sean O’Brien, Director of the Teamsters Package Division. (more…)

Momentum Builds as Strike for Local 812 Members Hits Ninth Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An ongoing strike followed Long Island beer distributor Clare Rose to the nation’s capital today. The Teamsters Union protested outside of the National Beer Wholesalers Association’s Legislative Conference (NBWA), handing out fliers and waving signs reading, “Clare Rose Destroys Jobs, Hurts Families.”

NBWA has repeatedly highlighted Clare Rose and its workers on its website. Sean Rose, the Clare Rose CEO, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to the association.

“NBWA promotes the beer wholesale industry as a creator of good, local jobs, but Clare Rose’s union busting and wage cutting is tarnishing that image,” said Ed Weber, President of Teamsters Local 812. “Wherever Clare Rose goes, we will be there. Clare Rose cannot ignore what it is doing to Long Island families.” (more…)

WSJ: UPS Tries a New Twist on Surge Pricing

United Parcel Service Inc. wants to get paid for packages it never delivers. The company is starting to ask major retailers to help pay for extra workers and surplus space on trucks when a retailer fails to ship as many packages as planned during peak periods, UPS executives say.

The new charges could also apply if a retailer’s forecast veers off course in other ways, like if the sizes of boxes shipped are significantly mismatched from what was expected.

“If there are variations to the plan, let’s see what we can do, but we should be compensated accordingly,” UPS Chief Executive David Abney said in an interview. He said the charge isn’t meant to be punitive but one element of a broader negotiation with retailers over pricing during peak times.

Washington State Patrol Communications Managers Vote to Join Teamsters Local 174

Teamsters Local 174 is proud to welcome the Washington State Patrol Communications Managers to our membership. Prior to joining the Teamsters, the nine workers in the group – who oversee all the 911 operations for the entire Washington State Patrol – were members of their own Guild called the Washington State Patrol Communications Managers Association. However, they decided in March of 2017 to join Teamsters Local 174 after realizing that they would have far more say on the job with the power of the Teamsters at their backs.

“There is a tremendous amount of value in having professional negotiators on your side,” said Jo Baumgartner, former President of the group’s Guild. “It’s hard when you’re arguing directly with your boss. With help from the Teamsters, we hope to secure better contracts with stronger language to protect us and better wage increases than we would have gotten on our own.”

The Communications Managers will be included in the Teamsters Public Services Division. They will join our other Washington State Patrol group, the CVE04 Commercial Vehicle Enforcement workers.

“We always say that Local 174 has the best contracts, which these employees saw firsthand during their last round of negotiations,” said Teamsters Local 174 Secretary-Treasurer Rick Hicks. “Now they will get to benefit from the strength that comes from being part of a group of nearly 8,000 people, rather than a group of just nine.”

“There’s strength in numbers, but even more than that, there’s strength in being a Teamster,” Baumgartner said. “We are so excited to be a part of that.”

Teamsters Local 991 Waste Workers Ratify New Contract

Waste workers at Republic Services in Mobile, Alabama have ratified a new contract by a 100-percent margin that contains numerous improvements.

“The 24 workers in the unit will receive wage increases of 2.5 percent, 2 percent and 2 percent over the three years of the contract and the agreement also lowers the threshold for when additional weeks of vacation are added,” said Jim Gookins, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 99 in Mobile. “There is also an increase in weekly vacation pay, additional ‘windshield pay’ or travel pay for when a driver has to travel to Mississippi, and health and welfare benefit contributions are maintained over the life of the contract.” (more…)

(SEATTLE, Washington) – Teamsters Local 763 has ratified a new agreement with Republic Services covering seven workers in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington. The members are service technicians and a truck and container washer.

Heartless Owners Say They Will Permanently Replace Over 100 Long-time Workers on Strike

GREAT NECK, NY – The workers who deliver, sell, and merchandise Budweiser, Heineken, and other beer products to Nassau and Suffolk Counties walked the picket line today, largely stopping distribution on Long Island. The over 100 drivers and warehousemen, who work for Clare Rose and are members of Teamsters Local 812, began striking when the company announced 30 percent wage cuts and ended the drivers’ pension.

“This is a highly profitable company in a stable industry. There is no explanation for massive wage and retirement cuts other than greed,” said Teamsters Local 812 President Ed Weber. “These are the middle-class jobs that we used to be able to count on in Long Island. We aren’t going to give up our livelihoods just so the rich can get richer.” (more…)

Fighting the Beverage Tax: You can’t fight obesity by killing jobs

The tax on sugar-sweetened beverages proposed by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is a disaster in waiting for local workers, businesses and families. On its surface, the tax may sound like a good idea: fighting the obesity epidemic while funding education at the same time – who wouldn’t like that? But the reality is that it is working families who will end up shouldering the heavy burden of this proposed tax.

Similar taxes have already been implemented in other major cities in the United States, and the effects have been devastating to workers. Teamster families at Local 830 in Philadelphia have already begun to feel the negative impacts that this tax creates, as Philadelphia started collecting a 1.5 cents-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened and diet beverages on January 1, 2017.

Since then, Local 830’s Principal Officer Danny Grace reports that: Beverage companies as a whole have seen their sales decrease between 40%-54%; Pepsi Philadelphia has announced a first round of layoffs of between 80-100 employees, and Teamster commissioned salespersons for Pepsi have seen their weekly take home pay decrease between 50% to 70% due to lost sales in the market; Coca-Cola has initiated layoffs of approximately 30% of its work force in Philadelphia; Canada Dry/7-UP and Dr. Pepper has initiated layoffs of 35 Employees.

All of these job losses have come from a tax of 1.5 cents-per-ounce – but Seattle Mayor Murray has proposed a tax of 2 cents-per-ounce. That is 33.3% higher. (more…)

Arbitrator Awards Back Pay for Injured Package Driver

On April 12, an arbitrator ruled in favor of Teamsters Local 25 in a case involving a UPS package driver who was injured and not permitted to work despite being released by his doctor. The arbitrator found UPS in violation of Article 20, Sections 2 and 3 of the National Master Agreement and awarded retroactive pay for John Perry, the driver involved in the case.

“This is a significant decision by the arbitrator because it addresses an issue that many of our locals have encountered when it comes to injured UPS members,” said Sean O’Brien, Director of the Teamsters Package Division and President of Local 25 in Boston. (more…)

Agreement Ratified by 100 Percent of Participating Drivers, School Bus Monitors

(DALLAS, Texas) – Members of Teamsters Local 745 unanimously ratified a first contract with First Student Transportation in Lewisville, TX on March 31, 2017. Local 745 organized the 381 school bus monitors and drivers that service The Colony and Lewisville Independent School Districts (TX) in 2016.

The contract includes some significant improvements, including wage increases ranging from 17-19 percent over the course of four years, guaranteed pay for all time served, an increase in the eligibility for overtime, and coverage of the membership under Teamsters Local 745’s grievance procedure process. New Jersey Tankhauler Gets Back Job, Back Pay

Local 701 in North Brunswick, N.J. recently won an important victory on behalf of an unfairly terminated Teamster.

Airgas employs Teamster members at their Lincoln Park, N.J. location, where workers fill cylinders and tanks with various gases, including liquid nitrogen, and deliver them locally.

On Sept. 21, Xavier Wilson, an Airgas Teamster, was unfairly fired for “most egregious” behavior. That behavior was briefly answering a call in stopped traffic while using a hands-free device. The case made it to the New Jersey State Board of Mediation and a hearing was held on January 26. (more…)

Local 25 Member Saves Two People From Burning Home

Paul Pereira’s UPS shift took a lifesaving turn Monday evening when the Boston-area Teamsters Local 25 member rescued two people from a burning home.

With 12 stops left on his regular route, Pereira’s next stop was 18 Hamilton Ave. Two houses away, he saw a porch engulfed in flames. Pereira jumped out of his truck and immediately started banging on the door, screaming, “fire, fire, fire,” and helping a mother and her stepdaughter safely escape. Both had been upstairs and although they smelled smoke they thought it was coming from a nearby barbeque.

Once he knew everyone was out of the house, Pereira jumped back into action with a neighbor. They battled the blaze with a garden hose and were able to contain the fire in just minutes. “I hooked up the hose to the side of the house and I just started dousing the fire out,” said Pereira. (more…)

“Miracles Do Happen”: Local 177 Wins Back UPS Driver’s Job, Benefits

Michael Davis is a lawyer who fights for compensation for the injured, but he didn’t have much hope for one of his clients: Franklin Marusky, a UPS driver and member of Teamsters Local 177 in Hillside, N.J. Unable to call out of work due to severe injuries from an off-the-job accident, Marusky was terminated from UPS.

To make matters worse, the accident left Marusky a quadriplegic and suffering brain damage. While his family, including his three children, was distressed and Marusky remained in critical condition, they learned that his benefits were being discontinued. (more…)

Local 707 Member Charlton Paul Selected for ATA “America’s Road Team”

Charlton Paul has been driving with UPS Freight for 21 years. During that time, he’s maintained an accident-free driving record and has received accolades from the company for his safe driving. Earlier this year, the industry took notice of Paul’s clean record and professional driving skills, too.

“I was very excited when they told me that I was selected,” said Paul, who has joined the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) “America’s Road Team” program for 2017-2018 to help educate the public about the trucking industry. Paul is a trustee on the Teamsters Local 707 Executive Board in Hempstead, N.Y. and has been a shop steward for the past eight years. (more…)
