Congress has finally agreed with what the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has been saying for years…there is a pension crisis in this country and Congress must resolve it as soon as possible to protect workers and our economy. The recent creation of a Joint Select Committee to work towards a solution to ensure the solvency of multiemployer pension plans is the first step in the right direction. As the Joint Select Committee on the Solvency of Multiemployer Pension Plans begins its work, we will continue to promote the Butch Lewis Act (H.R. 4444/ S. 2147) as the plan that will provide a path to financial health for troubled pension plans, alleviate pressure on the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, and ensure that retirees and future retirees receive all of the benefits that they earned. Take Action Now!
The members of Congress appointed to serve on the Joint Select Committee are Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN), Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ), Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), Rep. Donald Norcross (D-NJ), Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) (co-chairman), Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) (co-chairman), Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), and Sen. Michael Crapo (R-ID).
Individuals who do not have a member of Congress appointed to the Committee can help by reaching out to their Senators and Representative to urge them to cosponsor the Butch Lewis Act. The more bipartisan support the legislation garners, the more likely it is to be adopted by the Committee. Take Action!
