We regret to inform you that former Local 174 Business Agent Peter Coates has passed.
Peter Michael Coates, born December 23, 1946, passed away on June 2, 2022 surrounded by his family. Peter leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Jill M. Coates, four children and eight grandchildren.
During Peter’s career, he served as a Patrolman for the King County Sheriff’s Department and then a proud member of Teamsters Local 174 for 28 years. Peter was a leader and advocate in the King County labor community, negotiating fair wages and safe conditions on major construction projects for decades. Peter’s values of integrity, fairness, and service were evident in all facets of his life, from mentoring future tradesmen and women to coaching his daughters in little league softball. His family was of great importance to him and he was such a reliable source of knowledge, patience, and generosity for all of them. Peter’s immeasurable legacy lives through his wise words and countless union stories. Peter also served as the Executive Secretary of the Seattle Building and Construction Trades Council and the Vice President of the General Teamster Retirees Club.
