Last week, Teamsters Local 174 got wind of a plan that Cadman was trying to cut a deal for someone else to do struck concrete work on the Sound Transit PLA. Under the back door agreement, Cadman would lease mixer trucks to Grady. Grady would then assign members of Operating Engineers Local 302 to drive the trucks. In order to make that happen, the assignment of work would have to go through the King County Building Trades pre-job process.
Unions have a right to turn down an assignment of work on a PLA. Imagine how betrayed Operators would feel if Grady assigned Operators work to Laborers and they accepted the assignment. That is how we would feel if 302 accepted the mixer truck assignment.
Unfortunately for Cadman and Grady, the blatant effort to drive a wedge between the Teamsters and the Operators did not work. The request for a pre-job was rejected, and Local 302 leadership denied they had anything to do with this potential nightmare. They assured us they will not agree to perform Teamsters struck work. We are encouraged to hear 302 doesn’t plan on signing an agreement with Grady to dispatch operators to drive mixers or dump trucks. Thank you to the Operators for your solidarity. United we stand.
