Union Warns Against Driverless Trucks Hauling Hazardous Material

June 8, 2017

Airgas Workers Concerned Trucks Could Turn into ‘Driverless Bombs’

(EAST GREENWICH, R.I.) – Hazardous material drivers and gas cylinder fillers who work at Airgas here have been negotiating a new contract since the current agreement expired in February. After continued bargaining and several contract extensions, the workers went on strike May 31.

The workers, represented by Teamsters Local 251, are concerned about their families’ health care and a secure retirement. Additionally, Airgas’ proposed contract language would allow the company to operate driverless trucks transporting dangerous materials through our communities and on America’s highways. (more…)

The striking Teamsters are members of Local 251 in Rhode Island. Airgas Teamster Made Whole

New Jersey Tankhauler Gets Back Job, Back Pay

Local 701 in North Brunswick, N.J. recently won an important victory on behalf of an unfairly terminated Teamster.

Airgas employs Teamster members at their Lincoln Park, N.J. location, where workers fill cylinders and tanks with various gases, including liquid nitrogen, and deliver them locally.

On Sept. 21, Xavier Wilson, an Airgas Teamster, was unfairly fired for “most egregious” behavior. That behavior was briefly answering a call in stopped traffic while using a hands-free device. The case made it to the New Jersey State Board of Mediation and a hearing was held on January 26. (more…)

AmeriGas Teamsters Vote Unanimously to Authorize Strike Action

March 3, 2017

On March 1, 2017, AmeriGas Teamsters voted unanimously to authorize our Union to take a strike action if necessary. The workers, who deliver fuel and fuel products, have been in the process of negotiating a first contract since December 2016 after voting in September 2016 to join Teamsters Local 174. However, the Company’s offer falls short of our members’ expectations. The responsibilities that it takes to maintain a CDL with hazmat endorsement, and the skills needed to deliver these dangerous and flammable products to both commercial and residential locations, in all weather conditions, demand a certain level of compensation.

“All we want is fair treatment. We want our employer to follow the law and negotiate with us to get a contract that is acceptable to all of us,” said one AmeriGas employee.

In 2016, AmeriGas reported $2.3 billion in revenues and $422 million in operating profit across the United States.
