Record-setting increases will reward freight industry workers

Peninsula Trucking Teamsters from Locals 174, 231, 252, 589, 760, 763, and 839 came together this weekend to overwhelmingly ratify a record-setting new contract with their employer. The group, which consists of city drivers, line drivers, dock workers, and office/clerical workers, will receive larger wage increases and pension increases than ever before, on top of other improvements to the contract.

Negotiations went smoothly, as the two sides were able to reach an agreement in just one long day of bargaining. Peninsula Truck Lines, which is locally owned and managed, came into the contract negotiations with a willingness to recognize and reward the workforce for their hard work and professionalism, leading to this strong contract. In addition to the wage and pension increases mentioned above, the new contract also adds MLK Day as a holiday and improves vacation accrual – both important goals identified by the members and Union leadership prior to negotiations.

“Contract negotiations don’t always have to be war, and this contract shows that it is possible to reach an agreement that recognizes each side’s contributions,” said Teamsters Joint Council 28 President Rick Hicks. “Peninsula Truck Lines management values their workers, and it showed in these negotiations. In return, the Teamsters respect Peninsula management for their commitment to doing right by these hardworking members. As a result, we were able to quickly produce a contract both sides can be very happy with, which will allow our members and the company they work for to continue to prosper into the future.”
