Seattle Concrete Strike

[two_third]

Who are we?

  • We’re hundreds of construction and concrete workers in Seattle fighting corporate greed that is killing good jobs and slowing down infrastructure and economic growth around the region.
  • Rich corporate executives and company owners are ignoring our needs and robbing our retirees of affordable healthcare.

What are we fighting for?

  • We have shown up day in and day out for these companies, delivering the concrete that keeps Seattle growing – including working every single day through the pandemic with no hazard pay.
  • We’re fighting for healthcare for our families, and for our right to eventually retire with a strong pension and affordable options for health coverage.

Retirement Coverage

  • Concrete companies sit on millions while concrete workers work strenuous jobs and ask for the same retirement healthcare plan they have always had, a plan that could save families thousands of dollars a year. We have offered to pay for the increased costs associated with the healthcare plan, and the costs have not risen in the last 13 years. But the companies refuse to budge. When asked why they don’t want to offer that plan to retirees, they just say they don’t want to.
  • The companies are saying we want “Healthcare for Life,” which is entirely false. We’re asking for continued coverage for the gap period from when we retire to when we are eligible for Medicare.

Corporate Greed

  • Despite billion-dollar profits, the companies are still refusing to bargain in good faith. Their actions have delayed critical projects and put our entire community at risk.
  • These companies and their owners are rich. We aren’t. We’re just a group of blue-collar workers trying to make a living in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

We Want to Get Back to Work

  • Some of us have returned to work while negotiations continue to keep key projects like the West Seattle Bridge repair and the Link Light Rail expansion going, but the companies have refused to call back all the drivers we’ve made available to them.
  • Instead, these corporations use “ghost trucks” as scab labor. “Ghost trucks” are often driven by unlicensed, under-trained, and sometimes uninsured drivers, which puts the communities and commuters in danger. Learn more here

We’re Fighting for Seattle

  • The longer the companies delay this fight, the more Seattle is delayed in its infrastructure, housing and projects. That costs all of us. This isn’t just the fight for workers, this is a fight for our city.

How can I help?

You can make a donation to help support the striking workers here.

Visit a picket line: They are generally up and running from around 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and donations of firewood for burn barrels, food, and drinks are greatly appreciated!
